Yavapai College Soccer: Roughriders rebound in NJCAA consolation bracket
The Daily Courier

After the disappointment of dropping its opening match Thursday at the NJCAA Men's Soccer Division I National Championship, No. 4 Yavapai College bounced back with a 2-0 win over No. 8 Iowa Central on Friday morning in West Windsor, N.J.

The consolation match took place at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time. But the Roughriders (19-5) answered the bell to avoid losing back-to-back games for the first time in the program's history.

"If there was ever a time for us to lose back-to-back games, today would have been an excuse to do it," YC coach Mike Pantalione said.

But he credited his players, just as the players in the past, for coming back strong.

Jonathan Castro scored his 11th goal of the season on an assist from Daouda Cisse in the 34th minute. In the 67th minute, Gavin LaFollette notched his fifth goal on an assist from David Malloy.

Michael Moran, Humberto Soriano and James Iles all split time in goal to combine for the clean sheet. It was the 13th shutout for Yavapai this year.

Iowa Central finishes the season with a record of 17-6. The Roughriders have one more match, wrapping up the season on Sunday morning against No. 7 Essex County (N.J.). Essex advanced in the consolation bracket on Friday over Barton County (Kan.) on penalty kicks.

Yavapai is 7-0-1 all-time in consolation matches. The only time it has faced Essex County was in 2000, also in the consolation final. The 'Riders won that match 3-1.

Sunday's consolation final kicks off at 9 a.m. Eastern time.
