12 attorneys vying to be next Chino Valley town magistrate

By Jerry Herrmann

The Chino Valley Town Council learned Thursday that 12 attorneys from the quad-communities want to succeed Kenton Jones as the town magistrate.

Jones resigned Oct. 23 after Gov. Jan Brewer appointed him to fill the vacancy on the Yavapai County Superior Court created by the retirement of Judge Howard Hinson.

Thursday, in a special council meeting, Judi Schafman, Administrative Services director, said she had initially planned on having the council make the selection in February 2010. However, the Superior Court officials have asked if the council could make a selection this month so the new town magistrate can attend the court's new judges orientation, which starts on Jan. 4, 2010.

The council agreed and authorized a committee consisting of Mayor Jim Bunker, Councilman Joel Baker and Councilwoman Linda Hatch, and Schafman to meet at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 10 to narrow the number of applicants down to the final four.

The council also set 5 p.m. Dec. 17 to interview the four finalists in executive session, and to make the final decision in public session after the committee completes its interviews with the four finalists.

How do you have an article with a headline stating 12 attorneys vying for position then not mention who the 12 attorney's are?? What if one of your readers is contemplating legal action and the attorney they choose is one of these and next thing you know that attorney leaves for the position.
