Thanksgiving is the perfect time to say thank you to everyone who is part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters family. Whether you are a Big Brother or Big Sister, a donor or someone who has attended or contributed to the annual gala or Bowl for Kids' Sake, your commitment is changing the way children grow up in our community. And while Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters has made a difference in the lives of more than 1,000 boys and girls this year alone, there are still kids who are waiting to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. More than 75 percent of these waiting children are boys, the majority of whom have no men in their lives. Do you remember the older guy you used to think was so cool and how much you wanted to be like him? It's your turn to be that person. We need men to step up and make a difference in the lives of these boys.

Meet Damiun, a 12-year-old boy and a student in middle school. His single mom is raising him, along with a younger brother and younger sister. Damiun likes to play video games, watch TV and hang out with his friends. He loves dogs. He is fascinated by mythology and likes to read books about myths and legends. The best thing that ever happened to him was when he got a puppy. Then the worst thing was that the family had to move and leave the dog behind. He likes to cook, play baseball, football and soccer. When he grows up he wants to be in the army or design video games.

He does "OK" in school. His favorite class is digital publishing, and his least favorite class is science. His mom describes him as sensitive, caring, outgoing and willing to try anything. He sees himself as "the man of the house," so he takes on a lot of responsibility for a 12-year-old. Damiun says that "taking care of my mother" is one thing that is very important to him.

Damiun needs a Big Brother who will help him through his teen years, show him how to be a successful young man and give him a chance to be a boy without the responsibility of taking care of his family. He needs someone to laugh and have fun with.

Do you like dogs? Are you into watching football? Why not share these interests with someone like Damiun? Join Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters today by becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister. Just a few hours a couple times a month is all it takes to change a life. Contact Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters at 778-5135 or online at www.azbigs.org. Can't become "Big" right now? It costs $1,000 to make and support one match between a child and his or her Big Brother or Big Sister. You can still be an important part of changing the way children grow up in our communities by becoming a donor. Yavapai Big Brothers Big Sisters is a volunteer- and donor-supported organization proven to help the most vulnerable children in our communities succeed through one-on-one relationships.
