7/6/2009 11:06:00 PM Fire south of Williams likely to grow
Special to The Courier
The Cross Fire about 18 miles south of Williams had increased to 200 acres by Monday, and fire managers expect it to continue growing this week during a break in monsoons.
Smoke is visible from Interstate 40, Williams and the Verde Valley.
Lightning sparked the wildfire June 30, and instead of extinguishing it, Kaibab National Forest fire personnel are managing it to achieve protection and resource objectives.
About 50 firefighters are set to burn off any heavy vegetation around forest roads 105, 126 and 127 to enhance boundaries around the fire, which is located near the Bar Cross Tank.
Because of minimal rain in the area, the fire is growing at a slow to moderate pace. Fire managers hope that this trend will continue because of its benefits.
Fire management objectives include improving wildlife habitat and returning fire to its natural role in a fire-adapted ecosystem.
No closures or restrictions are in this area because of the fire. However, motorists and other forest users should use caution since personnel, equipment and occasional smoke are located along the roadways.
