Take a summer Edventure with Yavapai College in '09

Yavapai College Edventures are educational field trips offering a wide variety of learning experiences in diverse and spectacular locations. These trips for adult students range from one-day local excursions to weeklong journeys throughout the Southwest and Mexico.

Experienced guides accompany the small and they interpret the natural and cultural history of the locale.

The Community Education Program at YC is proud to present Summer Edventures in Southwest Indian Country.

The Summer Edventures are an amazing and rare opportunity to meet the Native Peoples of the American Southwest (Hopi, Zuni, Navajo and Apache) on their beautiful lands in a uniquely personal way. Learn directly from them in their villages, homes, studios, ceremonial and ancient places.

These separate but related trips are organized and led by LouVina Maho, a traditionally raised Hopi from Walpi on First Mesa, and a counselor and instructor at Yavapai College, and David Brandstein, a professor of cultural anthropology and Native American studies at NAU, ERAU and Yavapai College.

• June 19-22-Summer Solstice at Chaco Canyon with tours to Hopi and Zuni.

A "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity to visit Chaco Canyon, a major center for ancient Pueblo Peoples, at Summer Solstice, whey the dawn light shines on an alter in The Great Kiva (Casa Rinconada). Explore other ruins in an elaborate network of astronomical alignments in the midst of natural beauty. The experience at Chaco becomes more culturally meaningful with trips to Hopi and Zuni who consider the canyon to be one of their sacred homelands.

The $629 tuition includes transportation, lodging, camping, guides, entrance fees and some meals.

• July 18-19-An Insider's Tour of Hopi.

Organized and led by Maho, a traditionally raised Hopi from Walpi, one of the oldest villages in North America, this is a unique opportunity to visit the Hopi Mesas. Meet the people in their homes, cultural centers and galleries for art demonstrations, lectures and discussions.

Attend a Kachina ceremony, explore ancient sites and enjoy a tour of Maho's Walpi village and a traditional meal at her home.

The $349 tuition includes transportation, lodging, guides, entrance fees and some meals.

• July 31-Aug. 2-The Navajo Between Sacred Mountains.

Explore Canyon de Chelly, the heartland of Navajo beauty, with native guides. Visit Ganado and Hubbell's Trading Post. Meet the Dine in their homes and studios to learn about their life-ways, stories, history and contemporary issues.

The $579 tuition includes transportation, lodging, guides and permit fees.

• Aug. 14-16-The White Mountain Apache: A Sunrise Ceremony.

Attend a traditional coming-of-age ceremony in honor of a girl becoming an Apache woman on their reservation in the beautiful White Mountains. Learn about their history and life-ways. Includes visits to historic Fort Apache (a cultural center/museum and a reconstructed traditional village), ancient ruins, Geronimo's Cave and more.

The $579 tuition includes transportation, lodging, guides and permit fees.
